FBI seizes over $2.4 million in crypto linked to the Chaos ransomware group.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has seized more than $2.4 million in cryptocurrency believed to be linked to the notorious Chaos ransomware gang. The operation, executed by agents in the Dallas field office on April 15, 2025, resulted in the confiscation of approximately 20.2 Bitcoin (BTC). The seizure was publicly announced on July 28, 2025.

According to a civil complaint filed by federal prosecutors in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, the seized funds are purported to be proceeds of unlawful activities, including money laundering and extortion, tied to ransomware attacks attributed to the Chaos group. Investigators successfully traced the digital assets to addresses connected with the collective, which has been implicated in a series of cyberattacks targeting organizations in North Texas and beyond.

This seizure is part of a broader initiative by the federal government to disrupt cybercriminal operations and recover illicitly obtained assets. Authorities noted that, if forfeited, the confiscated cryptocurrency could contribute to the proposed U.S. Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, an initiative gaining traction following recent policy developments.
