Bitcoin Depot, the largest operator of Bitcoin ATMs in North America, has begun notifying customers of a significant data breach that exposed sensitive personal information. The incident, which was first detected in June 2024, has affected more than 26,000 individuals and is drawing scrutiny from both regulators and legal experts.
Details of the Breach
According to official disclosures, Bitcoin Depot identified unauthorized activity on its information systems on June 23, 2024. An internal investigation, completed by July 18, 2024, confirmed that attackers had gained access to documents containing sensitive customer data. However, notification to affected individuals was delayed until July 2025 at the request of law enforcement, who were conducting their own investigation into the breach.
The compromised data includes customers’ full names, phone numbers, and driver’s license numbers. In some cases, additional details such as physical addresses, dates of birth, and email addresses were also exposed.
Company Response and Customer Guidance
Bitcoin Depot has engaged third-party cybersecurity experts to investigate the incident and has since implemented enhanced security measures to prevent future breaches. The company is advising affected customers to take the following precautions:
- Monitor credit reports and financial accounts for any suspicious activity.
- Consider placing fraud alerts or credit freezes with major credit bureaus.
- Be vigilant for phishing attempts or unsolicited requests for personal information.
- Update passwords and enable two-factor authentication where possible.
Legal and Regulatory Implications
The breach has been reported to state authorities, including the Maine Attorney General’s Office, and is under review by several law firms. Legal experts anticipate potential class-action lawsuits on behalf of those whose information was compromised.
