Anthropic has introduced a new data protection architecture, Enterprise Frontier Safeguards (EFS), designed to give large customers stricter control over how Claude model data is stored and monitored for abuse, following sustained pushback over earlier data retention policies and broader concerns about AI-related security incidents.[1][3][4][8][10] EFS promises zero data retention on Anthropic’s side while preserving automated misuse detection across user sessions and accounts, a balance many regulated enterprises have been demanding as they expand generative AI deployments.[1][2][3][4][8]
Under the EFS model, interaction logs are written directly into storage controlled by the customer—such as Amazon S3, Azure Blob Storage or Google Cloud Storage—rather than being held on Anthropic’s infrastructure.[1][2][3][5][8][10] Anthropic’s detection systems then read a rolling window of that customer-owned data to identify suspicious patterns spanning multiple sessions and users, but Anthropic employees do not perform default human review of the content, and custody, encryption keys and any manual investigations remain with the customer.[2][3][4][8] The company has positioned this as “zero data retention–equivalent” privacy from its own perspective while still enabling the cross-session monitoring that many security teams view as essential to catching low-and-slow abuse of powerful models.[2][3][15]
EFS also marks a formal retreat from Anthropic’s earlier plan to retain certain customer data for 30 days for safety and reliability, a shift that drew criticism from enterprises worried about regulatory exposure and breach notification obligations.[2][4][10] In public statements, the company has acknowledged that the new safeguards are meant to give businesses far more control over how their data is reviewed, stored and managed, including the option to run automated safety monitoring with no Anthropic human review at all.[4][10] The rollout will be phased, with broader availability targeted for later in the fall, and Anthropic says it will not charge an additional fee for EFS, leaving customers to pay only their usual cloud storage and egress costs.[1][3][4][5][8]
For security and compliance teams, one immediate impact is a clearer separation of duties: Anthropic continues to develop and operate misuse detection logic, while customers retain full operational control over log storage, access controls, and investigative workflows.[2][3][4][8] That model is particularly attractive to highly regulated sectors, where keeping sensitive prompts and outputs inside an organization’s own cloud accounts can simplify legal review and align more cleanly with existing data loss prevention, insider risk and incident response programs.[3][4][8][15] At the same time, cross-session analytics run by Anthropic aim to surface subtle forms of model abuse that might be missed by purely per-request filters or by customers who lack mature AI-specific telemetry.[2][3][8][15]
Anthropic says Enterprise Frontier Safeguards will cover a broad set of offerings, including Claude Code, Claude Enterprise, the Claude Platform and deployments via major cloud providers, and that eligible customers will receive zero data retention on newer Claude models such as Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 until EFS is fully available.[1][3][5][8] The launch fits into the company’s wider frontier safety roadmap, which emphasizes reducing the risk of dangerous model use through product-level controls and closer collaboration with enterprise defenders.[3][8][15] Security leaders evaluating Claude or similar AI platforms will now need to scrutinize how EFS integrates with their own key management, storage policies and monitoring pipelines to ensure the promised privacy gains translate into real improvements in incident response and regulatory risk posture.[3][4][8][15]
