Microsoft is removing password management features from its Authenticator app starting August 2025. This change means users will no longer be able to store, autofill, or access passwords within the Authenticator app after this date.
In July 2025, the autofill feature for passwords in Authenticator will stop working. Payment information saved in the app will also be deleted. By August 2025, all saved passwords will be permanently deleted from the Authenticator app. Any generated but unsaved passwords will also be lost.
What’s Next for Your Passwords
Passwords and addresses already stored in Authenticator will be automatically synced to your Microsoft account and can be accessed via the Microsoft Edge browser, provided Edge is set as your default autofill provider. If you do not wish to use Edge, you must export your passwords from Authenticator and import them into another password manager (such as Bitwarden, Google Password Manager, or Apple iCloud Keychain) before August 1, 2025.
Payment details cannot be exported and must be re-entered manually in your new password manager.
Why Is Microsoft Making This Change?
Microsoft is shifting away from traditional password-based logins in favor of more secure, passwordless authentication methods like passkeys, Windows Hello, and FIDO2-based authentication. These methods are designed to reduce risks associated with phishing and password reuse, which remain major attack vectors.
The Authenticator app will continue to function as a two-factor authentication (2FA) tool and support passkeys for Microsoft accounts. If you use passkeys, you must keep Authenticator enabled as your passkey provider. Disabling Authenticator will also disable your passkey.
What Should Users Do?
• Export your passwords from Authenticator before August 1, 2025, if you want to keep access to them outside of Edge.
• Switch to a dedicated password manager or use Microsoft Edge for autofill and password management going forward.
• Set your new password manager as the default autofill provider on your device to maintain seamless login experiences.
